What it takes to build an AI resume builder — and when buying is faster
An AI resume builder looks simple from the outside: upload a resume, paste a job description, download a better resume. Underneath are file parsing, several language-model steps, scoring, document rendering, accounts and billing.

Effort
Why it's more work than it looks
A demo that rewrites one resume is quick to build. A product people pay for needs these as well.
- Model output needs checking
- A model can return incomplete or malformed data. ApplyForge validates the parsed resume as JSON and normalizes contact details before any rewrite starts.
- Keyword matching isn't string search
- Job descriptions phrase the same skill in different ways. ApplyForge builds a weighted keyword strategy with synonyms before it measures coverage.
- One pass isn't always enough
- A single rewrite can still miss what the role asks for. The pipeline scores the draft's keyword hit rate and runs a polish pass when it falls below a threshold.
- Documents have to look right
- Five HTML templates render to PDF in a headless browser, and each file goes to storage behind a signed download link.
- Two currencies mean two payment providers
- Razorpay handles INR subscriptions and PayPal handles USD, each with its own plans and payment notifications.
- Keys stay on the server
- Every AI request goes through an Edge Function that verifies the user, so model-provider keys never reach the browser.

Ongoing costs, whichever route you take
Building or buying changes the upfront cost, not the running costs. Every AI resume builder pays for hosting, a database, language-model calls for each document, a job-data provider if it offers job search, and payment fees.
